Things to know about our Medicare Advantage plans

  • Members enrolled in health maintenance organization (HMO) and point of service (POS) plans are required to choose a participating primary care provider (PCP) in their plan’s home service area. Members of preferred provider organization (PPO) plans are strongly encouraged to select a PCP.
  • Some UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage HMO and POS plans are referral plans. You can check plan referral requirements online.
    • Important: UnitedHealthcare does not track or manage referrals and does not require providers to submit referrals to process claims for our Medicare Advantage plans. However, PCPs can submit referrals through UHCprovider.com if specialist care providers request a referral.
    • Referrals are not required for members who travel outside their plan service area and access covered services using the National Network or their Passport travel benefit. Learn more about UnitedHealthcare Medicare National Network and Passport in the interactive guide.
  • Prior authorization and advance notification requirements will apply to some services. Learn more about our prior authorization requirements.
